A bit about me…

Gary ShearinFundraising is a science as well as an art – you’re part of a profession to be proud of!

I’ve been managing fundraising programs and teams since 1998 – for some fantastic causes. I started at Comic Relief, corporate fundraising for Red Nose Day 1999. After which I grew into a corporate, trust and statutory fundraiser. But at the Refugee Council I did something odd…

I built a database to drive high volume (but very personalised) direct mail for smaller trusts – that don’t accept unsolicited appeals. And it worked…

Since then I’ve worked in various charities in permanent and consultancy roles, heading up Individual Giving and Fundraising departments. Where I’ve built and implemented strategies that delivered year-on-year growth in individual giving, high-value donors, events and legacies. I’d say the key things have been establishing new income streams and donor journey strategies, focus on audience demographics, and co-ordinating activity (and vision) across departments. The biggest returns have been in bridging the gap between volume fundraising and major donor relationships – by developing effective mid-value programs.

I then spent two years ‘agency side’ – as an Account Director at Bluefrog. Where I worked with clients to build and maximise the best performing programs, strategy and tactics across an even broader range of charities. Each week I saw more results than I had seen in a year!

But what I wasn’t expecting ‘agency-side’ was to feel closer to donors – and more attuned their needs and motivations.
